Erie Canal, Day #7

It was a good day.

I slept pretty well, considering I was sleeping in a tent a couple thousand feet from an active rail line.

Train, also starring Charles

We were packed up and rolling out by 9am and went to the Bridge Street Diner in St. Johnsville. The food was delicious and we met another couple that we had so many little things in common with that we exchanged numbers. It’s pretty cool the conversations that start when you’re cycle traveling. People want to know about your trip and you might meet some great people.

The weather was beautiful today, and we had a fierce tailwind. The trail was 100% paved, and we had no towns to worry about riding through, just past. Till we arrived in Schenectady at least.

Sweet, sweet pavement

We took a break with about 20 miles to go at a neat historical site called Yankee Hill Lock.

I just needed a hammock.
The building in my picture is the building in the old photo. Part of it at least.

The last cool thing we saw was the moveable dam at Lock 8 on the Mohawk River.

After this we were on final approach for Schenectady. I’m always trepidatious about cities, but this wasn’t bad. We saw some really cool old neighborhoods as well, with beautiful architecture.

And tonight, after camping and rainstorms and lousy hotels, we’re here in a Marriott Courtyard and it feels luxurious. We have a first floor room for an easy time with the bikes, and we didn’t even have to ask. Cold IPAs in the lobby market. A large, updated, clean room. Just wonderful.

So relaxing

We spent the late afternoon and evening watching Indiana Jones movies and then game four of the Stanley Cup Finals. With some IPAs of course.

Tomorrow is our last day of riding, only 30 miles to Albany. Hard to believe that it’s almost over!
